THE LEWS DISTILLERY
From the family croft on our beautiful Hebridean home on the Isle of Lewis, the Lews Distillery was born - our name inspired by the iconic Lews Castle across the water from Stornoway harbour. Founded by island natives David & Karen, our distillery is driven by a simple yet compelling vision - to create a Gin that captures the spirit of the Hebrides and the vibrant taste of Stornoway in each and every drop. Distilled using the purest Hebridean water and bursting with botanical flavour, our gin is the first to be crafted right here on the island, something we are very proud of indeed.
HEBRIDEAN GIN FROM HISTORIC LAND
Around 100 years ago way back in 1923, the land upon which our family croft is located was gifted to the people of Stornoway by Lord Leverhulme, founder of the Lever Brothers' Soap empire. For a century our family worked this land, supporting the local community as dedicated Shephards tending many of the island's sheep. As we marked this historic centenary we looked to the future, with the spark of an idea for a new family business that would see a special spirit produced from this storied land. From this dream of ours, Stornoway Gin was born.
ISLAND CHEERS. BEYOND THE BOTHANS.
While we might be the first legal gin distillery located right there on our island home, it's fair to say that the Lewis islanders throughout the ages have been known to enjoy a tipple or two. One of our favourite stories of Stornoway past, are the tales of the Bothans which served as secret (and perhaps less than legal) places for thirsty islanders to enjoy a little drink. While we have indeed moved on from these wonderful windowless hideaways, we like to think that their visitors would have approved of the Stornoway Gin that we are now crafting on our croft.
